Northeastern University's Sociology and Anthropology Department has a national reputation for research productivity. In the last National Research Council ranking, we were rated the eighth most cited Sociology Department in the United States and were listed as the twenty-seventh most improved Ph.D.-granting department. Members of the Department will publish more than a dozen books next year including sole authored manuscripts with such leading publishers as Cambridge University Press (Kathrin Zippel), Oxford University Press (Winifred Breines), and Yale University Press (Alan Klein). Departmental research is being funded by such prestigious agencies as the National Science Foundation (Michael Handel), National Institutes of Health (Luis Falcon), Gorbachev Foundation (Anthony Jones), Scott Charitable Trust (Arnold Arluke), Brudnick Family (Jack Levin and Gordana Rabrenovic) and the Aspen Institute (Daniel Faber). Since 1999, the Center for Urban and Regional Policy, directed by Barry Bluestone, has received more than three million dollars in grants and contracts from such foundations as Ford, Rockefeller, Boston, and Russell Sage.
The Sociology and Anthropology Department continues to be successful in attracting students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Department enrolls the third largest number of Northeastern University undergraduates. The Department awards an average of four to five Sociology Ph.D.s and chairs at least three Law, Policy and Society dissertations annually. Our graduates do well. In the past month, one of our new Ph.D.'s was hired into a Sociology department with a doctoral program (University of North Texas), a second received tenure in one of our match-mate departments (University of Delaware), a third was promoted to full professor at a Research One university (SUNY at Buffalo), and a fourth was elected President of the Society for Applied Sociology (SAS). We have completely revamped both our undergraduate and graduate curriculums over the past three years to better serve the more demanding students that Northeastern University is now attracting.
