NotAroundHere
(in collaboration with Metaversal Studios and various academic partners)
NotAroundHere is a modular simulation game framework that allows kids to model the world around them and develop an understanding of the complexities of cause-and-effect and the varied histories and choices that can affect their everyday lives and communities.
NotAroundHere will engage a core team of pre-teens and college students in the creation of the game module framework designed to be used and linked in multiple and evolving ways. That core team will then engage a wider group of youth to digitally collect stories, images, sounds, and data about boundaries and barriers in their local community using traditional and digital networked means of gathering and mapping. This digital source material will be translated and morphed by participants using the open ended game framework, offering them a creative way to collect and disseminate their research findings and points of view. The project will encourage the use of linked and recombined game modules, will illustrate the potential for narrative and data to cross barriers, and will illustrate the potential seepage of digital games into the physical neighborhoods by means of temporal events and digital experiments.
