Emmett Price

Emmett G. Price III is a musician/ ethnomusicologist who studies the music and cultures of the African Diaspora. His primary focus is the music and cultures of Blacks in the United States and the Caribbean.

Professor Price is Assistant Professor of Music and African-American Studies. He received a B.A. in music from the University of California, Berkeley and both M.A. & Ph.D. in music (ethnomusicology) from the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to this current post, Professor Price held postdoctoral fellowships at Indiana University, Bloomington and Washington University (St. Louis).

An active musician, Professor Price has performed extensively in the United States and the Caribbean in styles ranging from bebop to gospel to reggae to hip hop and beyond. In addition to his experience as a musician he has directed numerous gospel choirs and has served as musical director in theater. Professor Price actively publishes reviews and articles on jazz, gospel and hip hop amongst other subjects of interest. Articles include "The 1960's, Gospel Music and the Catholic Church," "John Coltrane, 'A Love Supreme' and GOD," and "Talkin' All That Jazz: Where Jazz Meets Hip Hop."

At present he is completing a co-authored manuscript on contemporary gospel music. Professor Price also continues to gain an international audience through his popular column "Jazzology 300," published online at AllAboutJazz.com. Professor Price teaches "Music of Africa," "Jazz History," "African American Music" and "Music as Social Expression."
